(Topics and ideas to discuss with your child about our time at school.)
MOVEMENT BREAKS: What is your favorite movement break?
We have been learning about recognizing when our mind and body needs a break. We have also practiced how to transition into and out of our movement break time. The songs, dances and stretching breaks so far have been: The Sun’s Dance, Rub Your Hands, Time to be a Cloud, Count to 100, Count by 5’s, Dancing Mountain and Pop See Ko.
DAILY 5: What is your favorite part of Daily 5?
What is STAMINA? How do you build stamina?
We have been working hard on building our stamina during independent or Daily 5 time. Expectations are that students pick a spot, get started right away, work or read quietly, and use the whole time. We have reached 6 minutes so far!
The parts of Daily 5 that I have introduced and we have been practicing are: Work on Writing, Word Work, Listen to Reading and Read to Self. The students are doing a fabulous job demonstrating their understanding of expectations!
WRITING: What do you enjoy writing about?
Students have written in their journals about things they can do and things that they like to do. We have also completed a few writing assignments for our “All About Me” Posters!
MATH: What is a school tool that you have use in math?
We have been working on Calendar and Math routines! Some tools we have used are our number line, our SmartPal, dice, and a pattern-block template. We have discussed and practiced counting strategies and telling number stories with 1 more and 1 less.
READING: What are the 3 ways to read a book?
We have practiced the 3 ways to read a book.
1. Read the pictures 2. Read the words 3. Re-tell the story
I have finished assessing all students and have placed them into appropriate groups. (These may change as we get going!) We have practiced working in groups and will do more next week!
